Telecommunications Law and Policy (Carolina Academic Press Law Casebook Series)
Published in Hardcover by Carolina Academic Press (May, 2001)
Authors: Stuart Minor Benjamin, Douglas Lichtman, and Howard A. Shelanski
Average review score:

well-written and nearly comprehensive
Benjamin, Lichtman, and Shelanski have written an excellent book on U.S. telecommunications law. The book provides a glimpse at the early history of U.S. radio telecommunications and brings the reader up to fairly recent developments. Explanations of the spectrum, arguments of why broadcast media have been regulated (children's tv, indecency, Fairness Doctrine, for example), selected court cases and FCC actions are provided. "Notes and questions" are provided at the end of segments within each chapter and help the reader anticipate issues addressed subsequently. The book is well written and the authors have an enjoyable sense of humor. While the book does give attention to the Internet, readers might want to supplement the book's coverage by reading Sharon Black's "Telecommunications Law in the Internet Age" published in 2002 by Morgan Kaufmann Publishers.

Great Book
This book introduces basic concepts about how the government regulates broadcast television, radio, cable, telephone, and Internet service. It includes easy-to-read discussions and also excerpts of important documents and cases.

The book was written for use in law school classes, but it would be valuable to practicing attorneys as well as to managers at major telecommunications firms, especially those working to understand the Telecommunications Act of 1996.

Terrorism and Counterterrorism: Understanding the New Security Environment, Readings and Interpretations
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill/Dushkin (04 September, 2002)
Authors: Russell D. Howard and Reid L. Sawyer
Average review score:

A textbook - essential for understanding current affairs
This volume of essays was written and compiled as a college textbook for upper level undergraduate and graduate level seminars on terrorism and counterterrorism. These essays were written on both sides of the 9/11 divide, as such some of them predicted the occurrence of (large scale)acts of terror on American soil while others prescribe strategies for countering the terrorist threat in the future. Readers other than college students will find the book of interest too. After all, members of the general public, not simply college students, have asked such questions as "Why does America inspire such hatred?" or "What strategies should the US employ in the war against terror?" This book addresses these, and numerous other questions.

Although written by a variety of authors, the volume is well edited. Any work dealing with the US government and the bureaucratic responses to terrorism could easily be overwhelmed by a host of acronyms offputting to the general reader. The editors avoid this problem by consistent definition of acronyms and generous appendices covering foreign terrorist organizations, significant terrorist incidents, and weapons of mass destruction.

In addition to its coverage of specific incidents, the book addresses theoretical issues which will remain current in spite of the developments which will continue to unfold across the front pages of our daily newspapers. My favorite essays in the book were the ones which dealt with the intelligence failures prior to 9/11 as well as the ones which made specific recommendations to change or improve the intelligence community. I'll be curious to see which recommendations are incorporated into US policy in the future.

Great insights but first rate experts
This is a very timely book which draws on the expertise of many first rate people. I especially liked the articles by Russ Howard and Richard Betts. Must reading for all citizens interested in the most important issue of our day.

This Scribe, My Hand: The Complete Poems of Ben Belitt
Published in Hardcover by Louisiana State University Press (November, 1998)
Authors: Ben Belitt and Howard Nemerov
Average review score:

A master of belle-lettre, "belittristic"
This collection has been a long time in coming and it is very much worth the wait. This Scribe will be remembered long after the likes of Henri Cole, Paul Muldoon, Louise Gluck (the list could be reasonably long) disappear beneath the patina of the passe. Here we have some permanent poetry. The School of the Soldier is great literature -- this is the first time I read it. Who knew?

Bellit is one of the greatest writers of poetry.
Indeed, Bellit has been a forgotten - or atleast neglected - master of this art. His intricate poems strike us by virtue their enormous depth and move us in ways that few poems can. This collection should be a staple of any serious poetry-lovers collection - a book of poems to read and then read again.

Three Strikes : Miners, Musicians, Salesgirls, and the Fighting Spirit of Labor's Last Century
Published in Paperback by Beacon Press (September, 2002)
Author: Howard Zinn
Average review score:

Why don't we learn about this in history class?
Since Reagan's presidency all we Americans have heard are about the "problems" caused by the labor movement. This book is a refreshing reminder of the sacrifices (sometimes, of their lives) and struggles that working people have made to better conditions for themselves and others. The spirit and zeal and commitment to each other as a "union" of equals is inspirational. Remember if it was up to the corporations we'd all be working (starting at age 12) 60-hour weeks. We can thank the labor movement for the eight-hour day, safety regulations, and minimum wage laws.

Inspiring, Compelling
The history of the Woolworth salesgirls stirke, especially, is extremely well written and inspiring. Dana Frank makes you feel and see the interior of Woolworths in the 1930s and the conditions in which the women worked. She also makes you feel the power and joy of their struggle. A must read for anyone interested in American history.

Time and the Riddle: 31 Zen Stories
Published in Paperback by Dell Pub Co (November, 1989)
Author: Howard Fast
Average review score:

Read and wonder... Greatest Hits by Howard Fast!!
These are stories that provokes you, angers you, makes you want to know the answer to all the questions hidden under every sentence you read. More than everything they catch you with their twistedness, their humor and their frankness. It's an easy read, also very very funny, and Howard Fast has asked all the questions that makes us humans, but has been honest enough not to answer any of them. Maybe because its our curiousity towards them that makes life worth living. And maybe because some of them shall not be answered for a long long time ahead. It brings you back to your childhood, when it was a lot easier to wonder whether angels really existed, or insects could think or from where you came from.

Personally, I think this is his best work. Personally I think that these are the best stories I've read in my life.

A fascinating view of the world through Howard Fast's words.
A great book that amazes you with every story. Wonderful

Tissue Engineering of Vascular Prosthetic Grafts
Published in Hardcover by R G Landes Co (15 May, 1999)
Authors: P. P. Zilla and Howard P. Greisler
Average review score:

Exceptional writing.
Very useful for students of tissue engineering. The suthors extract fundamental principles from their vast knowledge of laboratory and clinical data. The book is well organized and provides a rigorous treatment of all aspects of vascular graft design. As a bonus, it is also enjoyable to read.

A Must for Biomedical Engineering Personnel!
This book explores the basic biology, clinical background and pathology of synthetic vascular graft failure, and discusses new approaches that have occurred in vascular tissue engineering over the last few decades.

It is a must for researchers in this field, who will find a large amount of useful information in the book, and will also be able to learn from the experiences of those who have been working for decades on the development of prosthetic vascular grafts. The editors have made significant contributions to the development of vascular prosthetic grafts, and in fact the chapters written by each of these two are some of the best in the book. No book can serve the needs of everyone, and because of its intense and expanded look at the historical perspectives of this dynamic field, this book provides a richness from which everyone, regardless of the aspect of biomedical engineering they study, can benefit.

Totally Sufficient
Published in Paperback by Harvest House Publishers, Inc. (June, 1997)
Authors: Edward E. Hindson, Howard Eyrich, and Ed Hindson
Average review score:

You do remember the Bible, don't you?
It is common for those who desire to know more about God's Holy Word to become incumbered with commentaries and methodologies that ultimately stray away from Biblical principles. As a result we become academically astute, and theological weaklings. Totally sufficient is a defiant challenge to revisit the basic tenant of God's Word. The book's thesis is " God has given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue."
2 Peter 1:2,3. This is a must read for all who have wavered or become less than courageous and confident in the sufficiency of God's Holy Word, and it's application to every aspect of life.
Doctors Hinson and Eyrich have penned an essential Biblical work.
This book is not for the shelf, it's for the hip pocket of pastor, teacher, counselor. Totally Sufficient promotes a surge of confidence in the original "How to" Book

Excellent overview of current issues in Biblical counseling.
This book uses noted authors in the field to discuss a wide range of issues in counseling and how the biblical counselor may look at them consistently from a biblical worldview.

Adventure from your armchair
After spending a while locating this book I found it marvelous, it excites the imagination its realism is refreshing and keeps dreams of adventure and fortune alive.

I would like to meet MR Jennings
I found this book very interesting. As a small boy in the late '70's met and befriended Mrs. Jennings who as a person, and with stories of her and her husbands adventures, had a great impact on my childhood on Roatan. I personnally have a strong connection to the stories, I am sure I would find it interesting if I did not.
